Cary Silverman is an ophthalmologist, serving as Medical Director of EyeCare 20/20 in East Hanover, NJ He specializes in LASIK and refractive cataract surgery.
He has loved photography for as long as he can remember. Cary was introduced to black and white photography as a child in summer camp and was hooked the first time he witnessed a print magically come alive on a blank piece of photographic paper placed in the developer in the camp's darkroom.
Cary has always been drawn to black-and-white photography. Maybe it's because he is a color-blind ophthalmologist. Perhaps it's because it caught his attention at an early age when thumbing through his parent’s Life and Look magazines. He was and is inspired by masters such as Dorothea Lang, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Margaret Bourke-White, and Robert Capa. he also loved the photos of Amsel Adams and Edward Weston. He has also been fortunate to have the opportunity to take one-on-one seminars with some of today's great street photographers, including Phil Penman and Hugh Brownstone.
Over the years, Cary’s favorite genres in Black and White photography have changed. He liked shooting everything from landscapes to portraits to the street. Currently, his favorite genre is street and documentary photography. He loves the spontaneity of walking the streets and shooting whatever he encounters. Nothing could be more rewarding than coming home after walking miles in the city, downloading images, and finding that one image that just speaks to him! Well, one thing could be more rewarding: getting an incredible candid of one of his 5 grandchildren good enough to print and hang on the walls of his home (they are lined with them).
Besides shooting, processing, and printing all of his images, Cary has also done all of his matting and framing for many years.
